Sailing Class
Today we had our first sailing class. After lunch, four of us went to the harbor and met Professor Aznar near the sailing program's office. We left our shoes and valuables there and boarded the boat. It was smaller than I'd thought, and sometimes we had to duck so the horizontal beam wouldn't hit us. Our instructor was named Carlos, and although we talked to him in Spanish, he tried to talk to us in English. It was interesting to talk to him, since his English vocabulary wasn't extensive, and his pronunciation wasn't too good ("shark" sounded like "sock," and "wind" sounded like "wine"). Nevertheless, he was a very good teacher. Each one of us had the opportunity to steer the boat, and we learned a bit about how to manipulate the wind in order to get to our destination. Professor Aznar followed us in another boat and, characteristically, took pictures. I simply enjoyed being on a boat on the Mediterranean. I really liked the view. I could see just about all of Alicante. Carlos gave us the opportunity to jump out of the boat and swim in the sea. I did it. It was freezing cold in that water, and I only stayed in for a minute, but it was incredible to swim in the Mediterranean for the first time.
